Board Approval to Proceed with Proposition 218 Notification
On September 22, 2026, the Board of Supervisors approved DWMR’s request to proceed with the Proposition 218 notification and protest process.
At the meeting, DWMR presented a five‑year schedule of proposed residential solid waste rate adjustments. The Board approved the recommended actions to:
- Adopt a resolution approving the 2026 Solid Waste Rate Study
- Authorize DWMR to proceed with the Proposition 218 notification and protest process required to seek residential solid waste rate increases effective January 1, 2027
For most residents, the proposed rate increase is small and gradual. The standard 60‑gallon monthly service is currently $41.03 and would adjust to $42.88 starting January 1, 2027. That is an increase of about $1.85 per month, or about six cents per day. Rates would then increase by about 4.5% each year for five years. Even with these changes, Sacramento County’s solid waste rates remain lower than many nearby jurisdictions.
Related Agenda Items
- The Board also approved proposed increases to facility fees at Kiefer Landfill and the North Area Recovery Station (NARS), along with other recommended adjustments to residential solid waste rates and facility fees. Facility fee information is available on the Facility Fees webpage.
- These items are independent of the residential rate proposal and are not subject to Proposition 218 requirements.
